The ENPI Horizon 2020 Capacity Building/Mediterranean Environment Programme (H2020 CB/MEP) has supported between 2009-2014 the implementation of the Horizon 2020 Initiative Road Map and Work Plan through capacity building and awareness raising activities, and has promoted integration/mainstreaming of environment issues into other sector policies. It was also responsible for the proper coordination of the H2020 Steering Group and the three Sub-Groups and the overall enhanced visibility of Horizon 2020. Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS) principles and practices in the ENP South region – SEIS Support Mechanism

The SEIS Support Mechanism-South implemented jointly by the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the United Nations Environment Programme/Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP) is a 4-year EU-funded project, building on the outcome of the regional ENPI-SEIS project - “Towards a Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS) in the European Neighbourhood”, implemented by the EEA in 2010-2015. The SEIS Support Mechanism-South (envisaged to run in the period February 2016-January 2020) aims to ensure proper linkages with the agreed work programme of Horizon 2020  for its second phase of work (2015-2020) and other relevant EU-funded projects and initiatives in the region.

H2020 Review and Monitoring Sub Group

In line with the UfM Ministerial Declaration of May 2014 and the agreed work plan for the second phase of the Horizon 2020 Initiative for a Cleaner Mediterranean (2015-2020), the mandate of the H2020 Sub Group for Review and Monitoring (RM) has been revised with the overall objective to monitor progress of the implementation of the Horizon 2020 initiative, particularly through appropriate information sharing systems easily accessible to all Mediterranean partners, in cooperation with relevant partner organisations. The H2020 RM Sub Group is co-chaired by the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the United Nations Environment Programme/Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP) Secretariat.

Important progress expected during 2012 in the Horizon 2020 investment projects

Support for projects in Lebanon (Al Ghadir) and Tunisia (Lake Bizerte) are well advanced with feasibility studies expected to be completed during the next 6 months. MeHSIP-PPIF has recently started on feasibility study assignments in Egypt (Kafr El Sheikh) and Jordan (Al Ekaider) where important progress is expected during 2012. With all 4 studies now under way, MeHSIP-PPIF will continue its work to develop the project pipeline and identify funding sources for preparation and implementation of new priority investment projects under the Horizon 2020 initiative.
