Integrated Solid Waste Management options in the Mediterranean

The objective of the latest national training course held in Ramallah on 22-24 November 2011 under the Horizon 2020 Capacity Building/ Mediterranean Environment Programme, was to increase the trainees’ understanding of the complex and multidimensional challenges of Integrated Sustainable Waste Management (ISWM) and develop their skills to allow for appropriate decision-making on ISWM options with emphasis on appropriate technologies and methodologies.

Horizon 2020: Promoting environmental integration through green banking in the Mediterranean

Sixteen (16) Mediterranean Banks and more than thirty (30) policy makers from Ministries that are key drivers in the transition process from conventional economies to green economies throughout the region, participated in an intensive Horizon 2020 training last week dedicated to Green Banking (22-23 November 2011, Barcelona). This was the first training of its kind in the Mediterranean region with trainees from Albania, Algeria, Bosnia- Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Montenegro, Morocco, Occupied Palestinian Territory, Tunisia and Turkey. As acknowledged by the participants themselves, it provided the setting and inspiration to continue the discussions and learning process initiated during these 2 days.

Treating wastewater by means of constructed wetlands

Constructed wetlands have a prominent position in wastewater treatment mainly because of their capacity to remove organic material, nutrients, pathogens and trace metals, their relatively low cost and their robustness. More than thirty local and national decision-makers, managers, university staff and NGOs working in the field of wastewater management from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Montenegro benefitted from a three-day sub-regional training dedicated to constructed wetlands, which took place in Dubrovnik on 12-14 October 2011. The training was organized by the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, within the framework of the Horizon 2020 Capacity Building/ Mediterranean Environment Programme.

Effectively managing solid waste in Mediterranean coastal tourist destinations

The island of Krk in Croatia was the host of a three-day Horizon 2020 sub-regional training (4 – 6 October 2011) on integrated solid waste management in coastal areas. 22 trainees from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Montenegro attended the course in order to deepen their understanding and develop their skills in strategic planning of waste management systems in Mediterranean coastal tourist destinations.
