In order to make real progress on the development and ‘population’ of the Horizon 2020 indicators from national sources, a series of workshops was organised between March and June 2013 in Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia. Draft factsheets for the selected Horizon 2020 indicators, developed by the ENPI-SEIS Working Group on Environmental Indicators with the support of the EEA/ETC and UNEP/MAP were discussed in depth during the eight national workshops. The process supports the countries’ obligation to regularly monitor progress of the Horizon 2020 thematic challenges, performance and to assess cross-cutting issues, as well as to make reflections on policy implications, including the development of a sustainable knowledge base on Horizon 2020 and implementation of the Shared Environmental Information System principles.
