Horizon 2020 in support of Israel’s Green Growth Action Plan

on 17 Apr 2012.

The capacity building component of Horizon 2020, stepped in earlier this year and organized a national workshop (25-26 March 2012) in Tel Aviv, in order to contribute to the consolidation of the process and provide new elements for the preparation of Israel’s Green Growth Action Plan. Israel’s Green Growth Action Plan is promoted by its Environmental Protection and the Industry, Trade and Labour Ministries and is planned to be implemented during the period 2012-2020. Several round tables have already been organised in order to give some inputs to the 3 major areas of the Action Plan: green innovation, green production and green consumption. It will be adopted later this year.

The specific objectives of this H2020 CB/MEP workshop which was entitled Boosting Eco Innovation and Resource Efficiency to go Towards a Green Economy in Israel”, were to strengthen the trainees’ understanding and knowledge on: relevant examples of EU national policies and regulatory tools; on how to bridge knowledge gaps and needs concerning eco innovation and resource efficiency in industry; on measurement and labeling of resource efficiency and tools for businesses (e.g. eco design).

The more than 40 participants from diverse sectors that attended the training, including governments, representatives of various industries; entrepreneurs; financial institutions; NGOs and Academia, also discussed about the practical implementation in Israel of the experiences presented during the workshop. The workshop was also linked with the Environment 2050 conference, held on March 27. It is considered the key annual environmental conference in Israel, within which the dilemmas, innovations and challenges facing the industrial-financial sector in the field of environmental protection and sustainability are addressed.

The EU funded workshop was organized by the Regional Activity Centre for Cleaner Production of the Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP CP/RAC) and the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE) with the valuable support of the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
