Improving the monitoring of industrial emissions in the Mediterranean

The University of Trieste hosted two sub-regional training workshops in April and May this year on improving capacities to prepare and implement Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTR) as a uniform tool for monitoring industrial emissions in all Mediterranean countries. It is an important step to eventually reducing pollution from land-based sources in the region. Jointly organized by the EU funded Horizon 2020 CB/MEP, the Marine Pollution Assessment and Control programme of the Mediterranean Action Plan and the Shared Environmental Information System (ENP South), the workshops targeted country experts who will be in charge of national PRTR programmes.

A total of fifty trainees from Albania, Algeria, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Montenegro, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia participated in the two workshops. Highly technical and mainly software based, the workshops developed the skills necessary for the appropriate quantification, analysis and tracking of industrial emissions giving emphasis on PRTR as the system identified by the European Commission and the Barcelona Convention for the full quantitative and qualitative control and understanding of pollution emissions to air and water. Trainees are now better able to intervene at the appropriate step of the industrial process and reduce pollution by applying Best Available Technology (BAT) and Best Environmental Practices (BEP). The overarching goal is to achieve the full coverage of the Mediterranean with PRTRs.
