Moving towards a second UfM Ministerial Meeting on Environment and Climate Change

on 25 Feb 2019.

The UfM Environment Task Force that met in Jordan in January 2018 launched the preparations for the formulation of the UfM’s post-2020 environment agenda. The agreed conclusions were further discussed at the 2nd UfM Working Group on Environment and Climate Change that took place in Barcelona on 12-13 November 2018.

Meanwhile, the findings and recommendations of the External Evaluation of the implementation of the Declaration of the 1st UfM Ministerial Meeting on Environment and Climate Change (2014) were also presented and discussed. Since the Horizon 2020 Initiative for a Cleaner Mediterranean is one of the Declaration’s main priorities, it too was discussed extensively.

Possible scenarios, setting of priorities, operational modalities and a potential post-2020 work programme towards a reinforced green/circular/low carbon economy in the Mediterranean were formulated. These will provide the basis of the declaration of the next Ministerial Meeting that is expected to take place in 2020.

Following on the conclusions of the 2018 UfM Working Group on Environment and Climate Change and of the UfM Task Force ENV, held in November in Barcelona, an online working group has been set up to discuss and draft a preliminary concept note for a future joint initiative to be presented at the UfM Environment Task Force on April 9th 2019, the day after the Closing Conference of SWIM-H2020 SM.
