Strengthening Mediterranean know-how on aquifer recharge with treated (waste)water

on 08 Dec 2011.

Through the Horizon 2020 Capacity Building/Mediterranean Environment Programme, twenty two mid-career water professionals from Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia were trained in the first days of the month (5-7 December 2011) on recharging aquifers with treated (waste)water within an integrated water resources management framework. It is generally considered to be an attractive technology for further ‘polishing’ of wastewater treatment effluents to promote water reuse as well as to augment groundwater aquifers.

The main objective of the course was to familiarize the participants with the concept and technology of recharging the groundwater aquifer with treated effluents for different purposes. It provided the background and basic principles, presented the design & operation aspects and various case studies. Environmental, institutional and regulatory aspects were also covered by the 3-day course.

The interaction and experience sharing among the participants was very intriguing as Mediterranean countries are at different pioneering stages of applying aquifer re-charge methods. Details on cases presented and background materials can be found at http://www.h2020.net/en/resources/training-materials/viewcategory/140.html

The course was organised in Athens by the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education and ACWUA and supported by the Hellenic Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change.
